Over the next five years one of my top priorities will be to help local companies get through the tough economic challenge that our country faces. As and when the economic climate improves, I want those businesses to be better placed to expand and provide the extra jobs our people need.

One of the ways in which I can achieve that goal is by ensuring that local businessmen and women have easy access to advice and are able to get quick answers to any questions they might have about Government policy.

As a first step I have set up the Sittingbourne and Sheppey Link 2 Business website to provide the local business community in Sittingbourne and Sheppey with a direct line to me, their Member of Parliament.

But as useful as an online advice service might be, nothing can replace personal contact, which is why we have set up a Business Forum, which will hold monthly breakfast meetings at which local businesspeople can discuss informally with me matters of concern. Also at the breakfast meetings will be invited guests, such as the business lending managers from local banks and senior members of Swale Borough and Kent County councils.
