Phew! It is HOT!
It is almost nine o’clock and I am sitting dressed in T-shirt and shorts, with the windows open and the sun streaming into my study. It is like a sauna, not least because the radiator is pumping out so much heat that I fear it will soon scorch the side of my desk!
Why, you might ask is the central heating on in the middle of the hottest day this year? That’s easy, I am following the orders of my local plumber, who is due to install a new combination boiler tomorrow. A week ago he came to “desludge” the system and when he had finished he left strict instructions to have the heating on for at least an hour every day to help circulate whatever magic solution he fed into the system.
To get the heating to work I had to turn the thermostat up to 26 degrees Celsius. Is he mad or am I?
Anyway, today was supposed to be a politics free day. Louise and I went to a strawberry tea in Borden. It was a fund raising event organised by the Friends of Borden Church, of whom my mum is a member.
The event was held in Pond House and it was a good fun afternoon during which we were able to not only enjoy some fine strawberries, cream and scones, but also meet up with members of the family and the many friends we have in Borden.
There were a number of stalls, including quoits and putting competitions. Yours truly had a go at both games and failed miserably! The photos opposite shows my dire attempt to score even a point at quoits, despite enthusiastic encouragement from a local toddler!
Of course, these days it is difficult to escape politics (despite my best intentions!) and this afternoon was no exception. Every person I met opened the conversation with some joke about claiming expenses! It would have become tiresome if all of them hadn’t followed up with genuine expressions of well being for the next General Election.
Thank you Borden!
