GORDON HENDERSON MP

FOR SITTINGBOURNE & SHEPPEY

It can only get better (sic)

And Labour said it can only get better! What a laugh! As we feel the tightening grip of winter and witness the chaos snow has inflicted on communities across Britain we are witnessing the dying throes of a worn out, corrupt and incompetent Government.

If you doubt the Government's incompetence, then I urge you to look no further than our local road network. Despite the snow most of us have been able to get around the area. It might have been slow and care was needed, but in the main we got where we wanted to get to without too much trouble.

Yesterday, for instance, I had a meeting in Bapchild and I was pleasantly surprised at the condition of the main roads on the Island and in Sittingbourne. I have never been backward at coming forward to criticise Kent Highway services but on this occasion they deserve only praise for the way in which they have kept the county moving.

But today I read that the Government has instructed local authorities to "ration" road salt to make it last longer, this follows news that some authorities in the South East have been starved of salt in order that it could be diverted to authorities which had failed to lay in enough stocks. Which brings me nicely to the Govrenment's incompetence.

Ministers must have been advised by the Met Office that heavy snow was on the way, television viewers certainly were! So why didn't they take steps then to work with local authorities to immediately build up their stocks? Their failure to act sooner npw means that they have had to impose rationing on local authorities.

I see even more chaos on the horizon. If the situation starts to deteriorate here in Swale we know who to blame, and it won't be the KCC!

But the snow is not all bad news. When I got back from Bapchild yesterday I was greeted by the happy scene in the picture opposite!

Trebles all round!
