Saturday 28th August
We went to Tesco first thing this morning to get our weekly shop. In addition to our usual food shop I bought a new knife for the kitchen. Bad move! When I was taking the knife out of its wrapper I somehow managed to slice through my left thumb and Louise had to drive me to the minor surgery unit at Sheppey Community Hospital.
I am grateful for the treatment I received from the super efficient duty nurse, Theresa King, who inserted six stitches in my thumb, after insisting that I had the wound ex-rayed to ensure I hadn’t cut down to the bone. We are lucky in this country to have such a wonderful National Health Service.
It is slightly ironic that having visited this week the St John Ambulance station in Sittingbourne and the NHS Ambulance stations in both Sittingbourne and Sheppey, that I ended up being taken to hospital by my wife!
Later in the day Louise and I spent a couple of hours at the Brittain and Hobbs charity event in Roman Square, Sittingbourne. We were there to support Jess McMahon, who will be starting work with me next week and who ran a stall at the event. We actually spent a few bob on almost every stall, doing our bit for local charities, and amazingly every tombola and competition I entered, I won a prize!
Later that day Jess sent me a text message telling me that I had even won third prize (an electric cheese grater) on the “Stick A Badge On The Sherriff” game that she ran. However, her text went on to say that they were nervous about giving a prize to somebody who couldn’t handle sharp objects. Ha! Ha! With a warped sense of humour like that, I think Jess is going to fit really well into my team!
Sunday 29th August
Was a relaxing day during which Lou and I did a two hour walk (including a windswept session along the Minster Leas), followed by a couple of hours picking blackberries, which are now in the deep freeze.
A major bright spot in the day was that our daughter-in-law Rose turned up with our granddaughter Leone, who is 9 years old and the sweetest little girl you could imagine. We love her to bits.
