Letter STG 4th Mar 2010

Dear Sir
In his letter to this week’s STG (Not allowed to vote against leadership) Mr B Collins demonstrates the deep cynicism which runs through modern politics. He seems incapable of understanding that there are still some people who enter Parliament with the best of motives.
Not all Members of Parliament are party political hacks. There are honourable members on both sides of the House who vote in line with their consciences, not in line with their party whips. Making MPs more responsible, and responsive, to their electorate is one way in which we can start to mend Britain’s broken politics.
If I am elected at the next General Election it will be as a Conservative MP and I will give wholehearted support to David Cameron in his efforts to repair the damage to our community and country caused by 13 years of Labour Party profligacy and incompetence.
However, I have pledged to put local people before party politics and that is a pledge I intend to keep.
Let me repeat what I said in the letter to which Mr Collins took exception. I will treat every piece of legislation on merit; if a policy will benefit our community then I will support it; if it is detrimental to our community, then I will oppose it. No amount of arm twisting by the whips will make me change my mind!
I understand that there are some, like Mr Collins, who will criticise me whatever I say or do. However, I believe that the vast majority of your readers are fair-minded and will give me a chance to show that I can be a MP who puts my community before my own interests. If I let them down they will then have every right to criticise me!
Yours sincerely
Gordon
