Dear Sir
I would like to respond to the letter from Mr DW Moore in this week’s STG, which entirely misrepresented David Cameron’s position on Europe.
The reason that Conservative Party MEPs left the European Peoples Party (EPP) is that one of the main objectives of this grouping of centre right politicians is the creation of a Federal Europe.
The Conservative Party is completely opposed to such a super-state because we feel it would further undermine Britain’s independence, which is why our MEPs felt it was incompatible to remain part of the EPP and is why they joined the newly created European Conservatives and Reformists Group (ECRG).
Our opposition to a Federal Europe is also the reason that Conservatives opposed the Lisbon Treaty, which we see as a further step towards that super-state.
David Cameron’s position on the Lisbon Treaty has been misrepresented by the Labour Party and its supporters. David promised that he would hold a referendum if a Conservative government came into power before the Lisbon Treaty was ratified by all the European Union’s member states.
Sadly, Gordon Brown and his Labour MPs betrayed the British people by ratifying the Treaty without giving us the referendum they promised before the last General Election. Now that the Treaty has been ratified by every EU country, and comes into force on 1st December, David Cameron has been forced to concede that holding a referendum in those circumstances would be a waste of time and taxpayers money.
In his letter Mr Moore once again libelled our partners in the ECRG, including Michal Kaminski, by accusing them of being anti-Semetic and homophobic. As it happens, I was fortunate to meet Michal during my recent trip to Israel and I can assure his critics that he might hold many views with which they disagree, but anti-Semetic and homophobic he is not!
Yours sincerely
Gordon
