Letter to Gazette - 5th Sept 2009

Dear Madam

In this week’s Gazette Keith Nevols accused the Conservative Party of lacking ideas and vision. He is wrong. For instance; David Cameron has set out five measures to help victims of the recession. They are:

1) A big, bold and simple National Loan Guarantee Scheme to help get credit flowing and save jobs.

2) A two year freeze on council taxes, worth £200 for the typical family.

3) Tax breaks for companies which create new jobs and cuts in National Insurance and Corporation Tax for small companies.

4) Up to £6,500 worth of energy efficiency improvements for every household, saving energy and reducing household bills.

5) Abolishing stamp duty for nine out of ten first-time buyers.

On the subject of the recession, far from being well placed to weather the storm, as Gordon Brown ludicrously claimed, figures out this week from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) show that Britain will be the only major economy without growth this year.

The OECD report is a damning condemnation of Labour’s economic and fiscal mismanagement over the past thirteen years. Britain now has the largest budget deficit of any large economy and the highest debt level since World War Two, so what is the Government’s answer? It wants to go on spending ever larger amounts of tax-payers’ money that we can no longer afford!

Yours sincerely

Gordon Henderson
