MP visits schools to encourage Litter Angels competition
Local MP, Gordon Henderson, visited two schools last week who were taking part in this year’s Litter Angels competition.
Litter Angels is a campaign initiated by Gordon Henderson and this year sponsored by McDonald’s, to encourage children to think about litter and its effect on the environment by being creative and artistic. This year the children were asked to create anti-litter posters and sculptures, such as wild flowers, out of rubbish.
Mr Henderson visited both Bapchild and Tonge Primary School and Murston Junior School along with local artist, Sioux Peto, who is running this year’s Litter Angels competition.
Mr Henderson read a story that he wrote called ‘The Litter Angel’ to the Year 6 children. He then had an opportunity to look at some of the designs the children had created.
Mr Henderson said:
“This is the third year we have run the Litter Angels competition.
“In the past, I have had a more active role in running the competition, however, because of my Parliamentary commitments I have had to take a back seat.
“I am delighted that Sioux Peto agreed to run this year’s competition and her drive and enthusiasm has shone through in the quality and quantity of the entries.”
All the anti-litter posters and sculptures will be on display at the Polka Dot Gallery in Teynham between 6th - 10th October 2010 and they will be judged on Monday 11th October 2010. The first prize is £25, second prize is £15 and third prize is £10. The same amount the child wins will also go to the winning school. The winning poster will also be displayed in local McDonald’s restaurants.
