MP given assurance from Government on renewable energy commitment
Gordon Henderson MP has been given an assurance from the Government that it is committed to increasing the deployment of renewable electricity.
This will come as welcomed new to Vestas, the Danish company behind the proposed wind turbine factory to be built at Sheerness Docks.
The assurance from Charles Hendry, Minister of State for Energy and Climate Change, came following a claim from Anders Soe-Jensen, President of Vestas Offshore Wind, that they would not build the factory unless the Government did not provide more clarity, for example, on Renewable Obligation Certificates (ROCs).
Charles Hendry said,
“A review of RO support is intended to ensure the UK stays on track to achieve our ambitions for renewable energy, in terms of promoting economic development, job creation, energy security and achieving renewable targets.
“A consultation in RO bands has been brought forward by one year and new bands for offshore wind will take effect on 1st April 2014. Please be assured that I will keep a close eye and personal interest on the progress of this project.”
Mr Henderson added,
“Like Vestas, I am keen to see the plans for the wind turbine factory progress as soon as possible as it will provide a huge boost to the Island.
“I hope this assurance puts minds at ease that the Government is committed to the project and I will continue to do whatever I can to help.”
