MP welcomes Northern Relief Road funding announcement
Local MP, Gordon Henderson has welcomed confirmation from the Government that the funding to complete the Sittingbourne Northern Relief Road is secure.
The announcement was made during a speech made in Parliament by Philip Hammond, the Secretary of State for Transport, who said he wanted to ensure the greatest number of highway and local transport schemes, with the best value for money, will be able to proceed, facilitating economic growth and providing more jobs. The Northern Relief Road is one of those roads.
The purpose of the Northern Relief Road is to improve traffic conditions in Sittingbourne, enabling regeneration of the town centre and linking the A249 to the A2.
Mr Henderson said,
“At a time of Government cutbacks I am delighted that ministers have recognised the importance of improving local roads infrastructure if we are to encourage investment into the area and create new jobs.
“Completing the Northern Relief Road is crucial to Sittingbourne’s long term future.
“Of course, there are other important improvements needed, such as Junction Five of the M2 and a Southern Relief Road, and I will continue to lobby hard for a commitment that these projects will be funded as and when the country’s economy improves.”
