MP urges rural constituents to buy fuel early
Local MP Gordon Henderson is urging those of his constituents who rely on oil and liquid gas for their energy to ensure they fill up their tanks before the onset of severe weather.
Mr Henderson made his comments following the launch of the Buy Oil Early Campaign, which has been initiated by ACRE (Action with Communities in Rural England) and the Federation of Petroleum Suppliers.
Mr Henderson said:
“There are a lot of rural households in our area who are off-grid and rely on either oil or liquid gas for their heating.
“During severe winters there is not only an increase in demand for fuel, with an inevitable increase in price, but deliveries to rural communities often become problematic.
“Getting in supplies of fuel well before the onset of severe weather can mean a cost saving when demand is low and also means that householders are less likely to run out during the coldest months.”
The Buy Oil Early Campaign is being backed by the Government, who have issued guidance on the website of the Department of Business Innovation and Skills.
Energy Minister, John Hayes MP, said:
“The Government recognises that the cost of domestic heating fuel is a significant issue in rural areas and has produced a ‘Cost of fuel in rural areas’ paper, which sets out the options available to help those in remote rural areas with their fuel costs.
“The Government has also published the ‘Rural Statement’, which underlines its commitment to Rural England, including work to promote energy efficiency.”
