MP inspects cleanliness at Teynham Station
Gordon Henderson has visited Teynham Station to see for himself the efforts Southeastern have made to clean up the station following complaints from local residents.
Mr Henderson had asked Southeastern to take steps to improve the cleanliness of the station and suggested that they might like to make a special effort during August as part of the "Big Clean-Up" campaign he is running in Sittingbourne and Sheppey in partnership with local charity Litter Angels and Keep Britain Tidy’s Love Where You Live campaign.
The aim of the Big Clean Up is for individuals and local groups to commit to at least one clean-up project during August.
Southeastern acknowledged that they had a problem at Teynham station, caused mainly by local youths who congregate at the station and on the platform and drop litter, and promised to take action.
Mr Henderson was invited to visit the station with Mike Gibson, Public Affairs Manager at Southeastern to inspect the results of their efforts.
Caroline Wallis, Duty Station Manager at Teynham station, told Mr Henderson that there is a part-time cleaner who works Monday-Friday to keep the station and platform clean and to pick up any litter which had been dropped. If the cleaner is unavailable, the ticket office operator now checks the areas before their daily shift.
Mr Henderson said,
"I was pleased to see the station and the platform were clean and tidy. it is obvious that Southeastern are making an effort to keep these areas under control and have made a particular effort as part of our Big Clean-Up campaign, for which I would like to thank them.
"I understand there is still an issue with local youths congregating outside the station and on the platform, particularly, on a Friday and Saturday night and so I will be asking the local PCSO to monitor the area. I would like to see the problem tackled by the authorities issuing more on-the-spot fines for littering."
