Gordon Henderson MP: More jobs means a more secure future
for hardworking people in Sittingbourne and Sheppey

Gordon Henderson MP has welcomed new figures released today that show the number of unemployed claimants in Sittingbourne and Sheppey in April 2014 is 608 lower than in April 2013 and is 105 lower than last month. This means more people with the financial security of a regular pay packet, better able to provide for their families.

In Sittingbourne and Sheppey people have recently benefited from new jobs created by companies based on Sittingbourne’s Eurolink Industrial Estate including Sparshatts, LKM Metals and Floplast. Sheppey has seen new jobs also at Sheerness Docks, at Aesica Pharmaceuticals in Queenborough and at Morrisons, which has opened stores on both the Island and mainland.

Mr Henderson said:

“It is very good news that 608 fewer people are now unemployed in Sittingbourne & Sheppey compared with this time last year.

“However, there are still 2,180 people unemployed in our constituency, so we have to continue in our efforts to attract more investment and jobs to our area. Our immediate target needs to be getting that target below 2,000.

“Hopefully the inclusion of nine council wards with employment potential on Britain’s Assisted Area map will help do that.

“There is further to go, but as these figures show, the Government’s long-term economic plan is working. We need to stick to the plan. It’s getting people off benefits and into work, delivering a more secure future for people in Sittingbourne & Sheppey who want to work hard and get on in life.”
