MP welcomes announcement that cheques will continue indefinitely

Gordon Henderson has welcomed the announcement made by the Payments Council this week that cheques will continue indefinitely and the target to close cheque clearing in 2018 has been cancelled.

Following a consultation over the past 18 months with over 600 different stakeholders, it became clear that many people wanted cheques to continue. It also highlighted that improvements need to be made to the cheque clearing process.

Mr Henderson said,

“I understand that the Payments Council wish to move forward in technology with the methods of payment available, however, this does not suit everyone.

“Many of my constituents and local businesses prefer to pay for goods and services using the traditional method of cheque and so I welcome the Payments Council’s decision to cancel their proposal and to continue with cheques indefinitely.”
