Gordon acts over smelly field
Local MP Gordon Henderson has been in contact with the Environment Agency about foul smells that have again made life a misery for people living in Iwade and the surrounding area.
Andrew Pearce from the Environmental Agency explained that the smell, which originated from fields at Culnell’s Corner, School Lane, Iwade, was due to a local farmer being caught out by the rain and not incorporating the compost quickly enough.
Originally it was suspected that the smell originated at the composting site at Ridham Dock, which is run by Countrystyle and has been a source of smells in the past, but on this occasion it was not to blame.
Mr Henderson said:
“Andrew Pearce assured me that the Environment Agency are taking steps to find a long term solution to what is a recurring problem.
“He said that the Environment Agency will meet with the farmer and Swale Borough Council in the near future to discuss the issue and provide advice to prevent it happening again.
“In addition, the Agency will continue to work with Countrystyle to ensure that best practice is used for storing the waste that they supply to customers.
“Finally, Mr Pearce has promised that the Environment Agency will remain active in the community to follow up any complaints of noxious smells as and when they do occur.
“With that in mind I would urge people who are subjected to this nuisance to call the Environment Agency incident response telephone number on 0800 807060 and register their complaint.”
