MP hosts two Q&A sessions for 16-25 year olds
The cost of transport and the lack of facilities for young people were the main issues highlighted by 16-25 year olds at two Q&A sessions hosted by Gordon Henderson MP.
The two sessions, one of which took place at Sittingbourne Baptist Church and the second at the Sheppey Academy East Site, provided an opportunity for young people to have their say on issues which were most important to them as well as gain advice on further education and employment.
Mr Henderson was joined by a variety of guests including Mike Whiting, Cabinet Member for Education, Learning and Skills at Kent County Councillor, Duncan Atkinson from Morrisons Distribution Centre, Jo Dillion, Area Manager at Connexions and Ken Pugh, Kent County Councillor for Minster Cliffs.
The main issue for young people in Sittingbourne was the cost of train fares to get to school or work as over 16 years olds do not qualify for a Freedom Pass for bus travel from Kent County Council. This was particularly difficult for those on apprenticeships who are not earning enough to cover their travel expenses.
However, young people at the Sheppey Academy were concerned about the lack of activities to do on the Island. Whilst they have access to youth centres, they felt a cinema, for example, would be more suitable for their age.
It was also highlighted that young people need more information on the role of Swale Borough Councillors, Kent County Councillors and their Member of Parliament and advice on how they should decide which political party they should vote for at elections.
Mr Henderson said,
“The Q&A sessions provided an opportunity for me to engage with the young people and listen to their views, which I found very interesting and informative.
“I would like to thank all the young people who attended. I have taken their concerns into consideration and will pass them onto the relevant agencies.
“I hope to host future Q&A sessions with the next generation of young people next year.”
