MP welcomes unemployment reduction

Local MP, Gordon Henderson has welcomed recent figures which show a reduction in unemployment claimants in Sittingbourne and Sheppey.

The figures released in November 2010 show the number of claimants is 164 lower than a year ago in November 2009.

Sittingbourne and Sheppey is the 250th highest of the 650 UK constituencies with 2,533 unemployed claimants overall. This represents a rate of 5.1% of the economically active population aged 16 to 64.

Mr Henderson said,

“Sittingbourne & Sheppey is in the top half of constituents with the highest level of unemployment so I welcome any reduction in the numbers no matter how modest.

“One of my top priorities over the next five years is to work with our local business community to help them ride out the economic storm we are likely to see over the next couple of years.

“I very much hope that working together we can not only see our businesses survive, but start to expand and provide the jobs needed by so many of my constituents.”
