Bin tax set back welcomed
News that the Government’s controversial plans to impose bin taxes on householders have suffered a humiliating defeat has been welcomed by local Conservative Parliamentary candidate, Gordon Henderson.
The Government had planned to pilot bin taxes in five local council areas before rolling the scheme out nationwide, but this week ministers were forced to admit that no local authority had expressed an interest in piloting the scheme.
Mr Henderson is now calling on the Government to repeal the legislation that would have allowed imposition of bin taxes.
Gordon said:
‘I welcome this defeat. Here in Swale we are lucky that Conservative controlled Swale Borough Council made clear a couple of years ago that it would never introduce bin taxes, now it looks as if all the other local authorities in England have followed their lead.
‘I do hope that the Government will now see sense and kill off bin taxes once and for all by repealing that part of the Climate Change Bill that specifically allows local authorities to impose them on householders.’
