Subject: Metal Recycling Visit For Local MP
Sittingbourne and Sheppey MP Gordon Henderson has been on a fact-finding tour of metals recycler European Metal Recycling (EMR) by visiting their depot in Ridham today (21 September).
Mr Henderson visited the site to learn more about the plant and the key issues affecting the metals recycling industry. The visit was hosted by EMR’s Graeme Carus and organised by the British Metals Recycling Association, of which EMR is a member.
Mr Carus said: “It was a pleasure to welcome Mr Henderson to the site to show how metals are recycled and explain about the metals recycling industry. The visit was an opportunity to raise the profile of metals recycling in the UK and the vital role it plays in helping the country to reduce its reliance on landfill, recycle more and reduce CO2 emissions.”
Mr Henderson said: “EMR is important to our local economy and it was extremely valuable to get an insight into their business. Metals recycling is a British industry success story and one we should be proud of. Companies like EMR are helping to ensure waste metal doesn’t end up in landfill sites but is transformed into a useful resource. All of which is good for our key environmental objectives of reducing waste and cutting carbon emissions.”
Ian Hetherington, director general of the British Metals Recycling Association, said: “Mr Henderson’s visit was very productive and gave us plenty of opportunities to discuss some of the key issues facing UK metals recyclers. It also gave us the chance to talk about the government’s current waste policies review and its implications for the metals recycling industry. It is vital this review helps metals recyclers to maximise capacity and the environmental benefits of recycling.
“The BMRA is committed to ensuring the new government understands how metals recycling operates, the economic and environmental benefits it can deliver, and the nature of the industry’s needs.”
